In Australia we have just had the recent swearing in of the new Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. It is public knowledge that PM Scott Morrison is born again and Spirit-filled, but it would be naive to assume that he will act and react perfectly simply because of this wonderful fact. So, now is a good time to be reminded of our responsibilities as Christians concerning our government.
Here are two important things we can do with our voice that will make a difference:
- PRAY: Our first responsibility to our Prime Minister and all those in authority is from the instruction in 1 Timothy 2:1-2. “First of all”, pray. He, and his government and all in authority need our prayers. We have a responsibility before God to pray FOR, not AGAINST those in authority. They are God’s ministers and certainly need God’s wisdom (Romans 13:1-5). While prayer is the first responsibility of a Christian, it is by no means the only responsibility.
- SPEAK UP: Jesus Himself said that we are to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13) and as such we hold back the works of darkness (2 Thess 2:7). How does being salt and light look practically? One way is found in Proverbs 31:8-9 “Speak up for the people who have no voice, for the rights of all the down-and-outers. Speak out for justice! Stand up for the poor and destitute!”. As you get facts about what is happening in the world around you, utilise the system of democratic government with which we are blessed in this nation and be active to make our elected representatives accountable to their electorate and stand up for what is right and just in the sight of God.
Don’t let the vocal minority be the only voice that is heard!
As a Christian, use your voice in prayer to God and also to communicate to the government the values that represent God’s heart for people.
Every blessing to each of you,
